The 112th Congressional session started with a bang and ended with a whimper. The new Speaker Boehner announced his priorities in January of last year, featuring tort issues denying your clients their rights. Through AAJ’s effective advocacy program including voices concerned about the 7th Amendment and 10th Amendment, the Speaker’s priorities—which would have shut the courthouse doors on millions of average Americans— have not moved through the Congress.
We don’t have time to rest. As we move into the second session of the Congress, we expect more attacks on the system we hold dear. But this being an election year, we can expect a more abbreviated Congressional calendar.
As we begin 2012, our focus needs to turn to increased involvement in election politics.
We need to insure that Congress is composed of a civil justice majority.
AAJ will communicate to you in the coming months on ways you can be involved.
We urge you to focus on Election 2012 as so much is at stake.
But we also need to take stock of what has occurred this year.
One of the brightest lights on the legislative and regulatory landscape of 2011 was when the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released favorable new guidance on the Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) reimbursement process for conditional payments.
Details on the new MSP guidelines and AAJ’s advocacy on this important issue can be found on page one of AAJ’s monthly Legislative and Regulatory Update.
Many people make resolutions in January. If you know a colleague who has yet to join AAJ, please take a moment and invite them to join; remind them that every day AAJ works to ensure that you can fight for your clients and make a difference in the battle against negligence and corporate greed. If we don’t fight this battle together, no one else will – and every new member strengthens our mission.
Thank you for supporting AAJ’s strong advocacy efforts. There is no other organization as dedicated to protecting 7th Amendment rights and preserving the civil justice system.
